Review: Angelfall by Susan Ee

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days, #1)
(Click picture to go to Goodreads)

Angelfall (Penryn & the End of Days #1)

It’s been six weeks since angels of the apocalypse descended to demolish the modern world. Street gangs rule the day while fear and superstition rule the night. When warrior angels fly away with a helpless little girl, her seventeen-year-old sister Penryn will do anything to get her back.

Anything, including making a deal with an enemy angel.

Raffe is a warrior who lies broken and wingless on the street. After eons of fighting his own battles, he finds himself being rescued from a desperate situation by a half-starved teenage girl.

Traveling through a dark and twisted Northern California, they have only each other to rely on for survival. Together, they journey toward the angels’ stronghold in San Francisco where she’ll risk everything to rescue her sister and he’ll put himself at the mercy of his greatest enemies for the chance to be made whole again.

*   *   *
I'm usually not a big fan of reading about angels but I am so glad I was told about this book! I loved this book so much I can't even explain how great it was! But I'm gonna give it a go!

It's starts off with 17 year old Penryn, her schizophrenic mother and her crippled sweet little sister running for their lives in the abandoned streets of Northern California where danger lurks around every corner and warrior angels swarm the sky. As they are running these angels swarm in and Penryn runs into the hott Raffe who just got his wings cut off by these angels. Penryn is in the process of helping him and she looks over to see one of the angels kidnapping her little sister. Raffe and Penryn band together on a mission to save her little sister and for him to get his wings reattached. Can they do it? And will Penryn be able to resist her temptation to Raffe when all she's seen is to hate the angels who have destroyed her life and place she called home?

The writing in this book is so intense and graphic at times and I'm gonna say it's pretty awesome. I couldn't put this book down! The style and flow of this book works perfectly and I didn't get bored at any moment. This book kept me interested all the way through.

It was also nice that Raffe and Penryn didn't fall in love immediately but Raffe is giving Penryn a run for her money with all his hotness. And let's talk a little about Obi cause he definitely I think is going to be a contender for the inevitable love triangle. There was something about Obi that was pure sweetness but also having to be a leader of a resistance regime made him pretty tough and bad ass. Loved him! If Penryn doesn't want him I'll take him off her hands! ;)

But on a serious note Susan did an amazing job and I will definitely be reading on in this series! Amazing book! 5/5 stars!!!

Dead Letter Office (Parish Mail #1)

Blurb: When Celia’s father is killed in Afghanistan, she moves with her mother to New Orleans, the city where her father grew up. Struggling to adjust and haunted by troubling dreams, Celia finds comfort in new friends like Tilly, a practicing witch, and Donovan, the son of police detective. On Halloween, bizarre supernatural occurrences rock the city. Celia meets the mysterious Luc and finds a letter, over a hundred years old, addressed to her.

The paranormal repercussions continue when Celia learns that Luc is the restless spirit of a young man murdered in 1854, only able to assume solid form at night. And then, to her shock, Celia finds that the letter, which describes the suspected murder of a man in 1870, contains uncanny parallels to the present-day death of Abel Sims, a homeless veteran.

With help from Luc, Tilly, and Donovan, Celia races to solve the murder—and the mystery of the letter—using both magical and forensic clues.

I received this ebook from the publisher, Coliloquy. Coliloquy is different from other publishers and gives the reader a different experience giving you an "active fiction" experience. What might that be you ask? Well it's a new way of e-reading that lets you choose the way you want the story to head. Throughout the story you are given options where you can choose what way it goes but the reader still gets the same outcome so you aren't missing anything. It's really a fun experience and this is my second book from this publisher and I will definitely be reading more from these awesome authors who have written these books! You can check out my review of Witch's Brew by Heidi R. Kling.
The book starts with Celia's fathers funeral and I hardly knew Celia but the story had me in tears reading about her dealing with her father's death. She and her mother just moved back to where her father's family is from in New Orleans and they try to make their home there. Celia soon finds a letter that is over 150 years old and with the help of a few friends and a certain handsome ghost they go on hunt to solve the murder of Abel.
I really liked all the characters. Celia felt very real and like she could be a friend to me. Tilly made me laugh and her excitable personality was so fun. She become a big help with her witch abilities and then Donovan. Yum! Loved him but I also loved Luc. Oh and Sloan.. he was an ass but something about him made me want to hear more about him. All these boys I couldn't make up my mind. Can I have three boys pining for me please?! Haha. Kidding!
The writing in this book flows so easily I couldn't stop reading. I read this in one sitting it was so good. I really didn't want it to end. I can't wait to see what happens next in the series. I will definitely be reading the next books! Can't wait! I give this 5/5 stars!

I received this eBook from the lovely author herself and thank her for allowing me to read her book in return for an honest review.
I enjoyed this book and really like the idea of the plot. The plot was new and different but the characters fell a little flat for me. Kate got on my nerves most of the time. She didn't have much of a backbone and let Jack push her around a lot. I liked Jack in the beginning but then he seemed to always be apologizing for something and he was kind of just a dirt bag. He didn't treat Kate the way she should have been treated and I'm sure she stayed with him in the beginning because of the curse. And then Sebastian comes back to town.. I really liked Sebastion and loved his dark hair, motorcycle riding, quiet and shy attitude. He's my kind of guy! Loved him and wanted more of Seb! He could sing to me all he wants! Yumm! ;)
The book had me wanting to read more and want to know what happened with them. It kept me interested. At times I felt the book dragged a bit and a little too much description that I found myself scanning to get through it. Things felt repeated at times as well but I did still like this book. I give this book 3/5 stars. I like this book so go buy a copy! You don't want to miss out!

Review: Surfacing by Shana Norris

(Click photo to go to Goodreads)

Sixteen-year-old Mara Westray has just lost her mother, and now, being shipped off to live with the father she doesn’t know is not how she imagined grieving. She’s already counting down the days until she turns eighteen and can leave the tiny island of Swans Landing.
But from the moment she steps off the ferry, nothing is as ordinary as it looks. Whispers of a haunting song on the wind make her see impossible things, and she isn’t sure she can trust her judgment about what is real and what isn’t anymore. Maybe she can’t even trust her judgment about quiet Josh Canavan, whose way of speaking in riddles and half-truths only confuses her more, luring her deeper into the secrets hidden beneath the ocean’s surface.

As she tries to unravel the events that led to her mom fleeing the island sixteen years ago, Mara finds that the biggest secret of all is only the beginning.

*   *   *

I received this ebook from the lovely author Shana Norris for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book and was a nice change of pace.

Mara is a young, angry girl just wanting to be loved. She recently lost her mother to cancer. She was then uprooted from her home to go and live with her father whom she doesn't know. She at times frustrated me but I could understand a bit as to why she acted the way she did. I can't imagine the things Mara had to deal with and all the changes she went through. When she moves there things on the secluded island aren't all that they seem and she can't figure out what's really happening. I don't want to give away too much but I do just want to say that Josh is awesome. LOVED him! He was so cute with Mara. I hope we get to see more of them or a second book in the series? *nudge nudge wink wink* ;)

I haven't read many books about merpeople and I'm glad I got the chance to read this book because it was a nice introduction into their world. I give this 4/5 stars. I will definitely be reading more books written by Shana! And go and buy this book! You won't regret it!

Review: Obsidian by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Obsidian (Lux, #1)
(Click picture to go to Goodreads)

Obsidian (Lux #1)

Blurb: Starting over sucks.When we moved to West Virginia right before my senior year, I'd pretty much resigned myself to thick accents, dodgy internet access, and a whole lot of boring.... until I spotted my hot neighbor, with his looming height and eerie green eyes. Things were looking up.And then he opened his mouth.Daemon is infuriating. Arrogant. Stab-worthy. We do not get along. At all. But when a stranger attacks me and Daemon literally freezes time with a wave of his hand, well, something...unexpected happens. The hot alien living next door marks me.You heard me. Alien. Turns out Daemon and his sister have a galaxy of enemies wanting to steal their abilities, and Daemon's touch has me lit up like the Vegas Strip. The only way I'm getting out of this alive is by sticking close to Daemon until my alien mojo fades. If I don't kill him first, that is.
*   *   *
I read Half-Blood by Jennifer and absolutely knew I had to read Obsidian and let me just tell you.. This book was AMAZING! So funny, so hot, so.... alien. I read this book in one sitting and when it was over I was so disappointed! I wanted to keep reading more Daemon and Katy. I loved reading their love/hate relationship and had me laughing out loud so many times. Katy is a strong independent girl and I love that about her. She doesn't take crap from no one, especially Daemon. And Daemon, oh my lordy he is one sexy , hot, smart ass with some alien alien mojo. I loved him and his attitude and I understand why he has to be careful with falling in love with a human because of what happened to Dawson. Oh and the fact that Daemon calls her Kitten has me melting to a puddle on the ground. Oh. Em. Gee.
 The story line in this book is great and thought out so well it made this book so much more enjoyable. I loved the flow and writing style. Even though some of the main characters are aliens these guys are all pretty relatable. It was awesome that Katy was a book blogger. The action scenes are intense and awesome. I seriously can't say enough good stuff about this book so seriously just go pick up a copy and read it. You will NOT regret it. It's awesome and it's got hot aliens. What's there not to like? ;)

Witch's Brew: The Spellspinners of Melas County

Kindle Edition342 pages
Published January 11th 2012 by Coliloquy, LLC

The Spellspinners of Melas County is a fantasy YA romance series about a witch, a warlock, and their fight for their forbidden but prophesied love.

Once soulmates, the witch and warlock covens of the California coast have been estranged for a century. Raised to hate each other, their teenagers meet in the Solstice Stones, a magical battleground where they draw energy from each other to maintain their balance. 16 year olds Logan and Lily have spent years training for their first Stones…only to discover just days before that the enemy may not be what either of them had thought. In Witch’s Brew, Lily is torn between her feelings for Logan and her coven’s need to know who—or what—he is. The young lovers race against time, their distrust for each other, and the powerful influence of their elders to unravel the mystery of their pasts before their future is destroyed.
*   *   *

This book was different than any book I've read where you able to choose you're own "destiny." Let me explain.. As you're reading the reader gets an interactive experience and is able to chose which way they want the story to go. The ending is still the same but you get to take different ways to get there. I read both ways just so I could be able to review it better.

I was apprehensive at first and was like ohhh man another star-crossed couple forbidden to be together but fighting against it all to break the curse. And let me just say I LOVED this book. It was totally different from what I thought it was going to be and I love when I get to be pleasantly surprised by a book. Kling did just that.

The book is all about witches and warlocks and a curse that has pitted them against each other for the last hundred years. Witches and warlocks were once at peace but it started to be too much for them to get along and they became rivals as they didn't agree with how the other dealt with their magic. Warlocks deal in the dark magic and the witches dealt with the light. They had a hundred years to come to some sort of agreement or their magic would be stripped from the forever. So Lily and Logan try to join forces to figure out how to stop this curse. But can they do it?

Lily and Logan were so cute together and I loved loved Logan. He truly cared about Lily and wanted to do anything to protect her. Together they go against everything they were taught and try to work together to break this curse. Her friendship with Orchid was so funny and I loved how good of a best friend she was to Lily. The relationships in this book were really relatable and I connected with each character. Loved it.

The writing is both magical and poetic. It all flows so nicely together and had me reading it in one sitting. I didn't move from the couch once. I really enjoy books about witches and this book did not disappoint in any way. If you have a Kindle, BUY THIS BOOK! You won't regret it!

Review: Bite Me, Try Me, Fang Me by Parker Blue

Bite Me (Demon Underground, #1)Try Me (Demon Underground, #2)Fang Me (Demon Underground, #3)
(Click each book to bring you to their Goodreads profile)

Title: Bite Me, Try Me, Fang Me
Author: Parker Blue
Publisher: Bell Bridge Books
The vampires want it. The demons want it too. And someone is willing to kill Val for it.
Val and Fang have to find the powerful Encyclopedia Magicka before either of San Antonio's warring underworld factions locate it, or the consequences will be deadly for the entire city.
As usual, Val's vampire enemies (they still call her The Slayer,) want her dead, and even some of her fellow demons may be less than trustworthy, since they'd like to grab the legendary book of spells before she does. Val has a personal claim to the Encyclopedia--her demon father left it to her when he died--but someone stole it recently. Where did the thief hide it?
Battling vamps and dodging demons, Val struggles to unravel the mystery. At the same time, she's fighting her attraction to sweet, sexy Shade, her favorite incubus. Rumor has it that Val will lose her half-demon, vampire-fighting powers if she gives herself to him.
With a crowd of vamps and demons out to trick her or kill her, it's not a good time for her to risk her job as the city's best vampire hunter by falling in love. The stakes are high--and aimed right at her heart. But Lola, Val's hungry little lust demon, doesn't like being denied. Will Lola finally get her way?
*   *   *
Thank you NetGalley and Bell Bridge Books for allowing me to review this set of ebooks.
Val is a bad ass vampire slayer/succubus and you're thrown into action from the start. Val was funny and smart witted with her sarcastic behavior. I found myself laughing out loud a few times. I liked that Val was independent and didn't always depend on a guy to help rescue her in fact, she did a lot of the rescuing and protecting.
I really enjoyed this set of books and its hard to separate each one into their own review cause I read them all the way through I was so enthralled in these books. I love all things vampires as I'm sure I've said it a hundred times and this series didn't disappoint. We also got to hear a little about magick and lots about demons. Each demon had a different talent and was described very well without it being shoved down my throat. The writing flowed well and was pretty much nonstop action and adventure.
I LOVED Shade! Need me some more of him and am looking forward to reading the 4th book in the series! I recommend this series to any vamp and/or demon lovers! We get a good mix of paranormal romance without too much sappy love story that a lot of books seem to be doing these days. Overall I would give each book 4/5 stars!

I received this book from the author herself for an honest review. I really truly feel horrible for what I'm about to say *hides face* so I'm going to keep is super short and sweet. But this book just wasn't for me. I couldn't get into it. I tried so hard to but it just wasn't my style. I think others may like it but it just wasn't for me.

Review: Intangible by J. Meyer

(Click picture for link to Goodreads)

ebook264 pages
Published January 31st 2012

Twins Sera and Luke Raine have a well-kept secret—she heals with a touch of her hand, he sees the future. All their lives they’ve helped those in need on the sly. They’ve always thought of their abilities as being a gift.

Then Luke has a vision that Sera is killed. That gift they’ve always cherished begins to feel an awful lot like a curse. Because the thing about Luke’s ability? He’s always right. And he can’t do anything about it.

*   *   *

I received this from J. Meyers herself for an honest review and that's exactly what I'm going to set out to do because I can't even begin to say how much I loved this book. It touches on gifted people, vampires, and elves. The world that J. Meyer created was mystical and enchanting to read about. It had me hooked and the writing style flowed easily it had me reading faster than I could turn the pages. It was awesome. I love when a book gets me excited to keep reading.

 The book starts off with twins Sera, who can heal with the touch of her hands and Luke, who Sees the future. I really enjoyed their camaraderie and how they teased each other. They had me laughing out loud a few times. (My husband looked at me like I was crazy.) So much happened it's so hard to summarize and so many fun plots twists that you HAVE to read it to understand what I'm talking about. This book had my heart pumping and had me in tears a couple times. There was some romance in the book and I liked that it wasn't all of a sudden love and didn't focus on that. But I have to just say I love love love Jonas. Can't wait to see what happens next. And the ending was just enough to make me want more NOW!
I give this book 5 stars!
